Lorem Ipsum — The Placeholder Text That Has Survived for Five Centuries

Where Lorem Ipsum Actually Comes From

Lorem Ipsum is derived from “De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” (On the Ends of Good and Evil), a treatise on ethics written by the Roman philosopher Cicero in 45 BC. Specifically, it comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of the work, which discuss the concepts of pleasure and pain in Epicurean philosophy.

The original Latin text includes the passage: “Neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit…” which translates roughly to “Neither is there anyone who loves, pursues, or desires pain itself because it is pain…”

The “Lorem Ipsum” version used today is not a direct copy of Cicero’s text. It has been altered — words have been removed, added, and scrambled over the centuries so that it is no longer proper Latin. This was likely intentional: the goal was text that looked like natural language (with varied word lengths, sentence structures, and letter distributions similar to real text) without being readable, so it would not distract from the design it was filling.

How It Became the Design Standard

Lorem Ipsum made the jump from philosophy text to typesetting placeholder in the 1500s when an unknown printer scrambled Cicero’s text to create a type specimen book — a catalog showing different fonts and layouts. This specimen book survived and was used by printers for centuries.

The text gained modern ubiquity in the 1960s when Letraset, a company that made dry-transfer lettering sheets used by graphic designers, included Lorem Ipsum passages in their sheet catalog. When desktop publishing exploded in the 1980s with PageMaker and later QuarkXPress, Lorem Ipsum was included as default placeholder text in these software tools, cementing its status as the universal standard.

Why Designers Use Placeholder Text at All

The purpose of Lorem Ipsum is to let viewers evaluate a design without being distracted by the content. When a layout is filled with readable English text, reviewers inevitably start reading the text, commenting on the writing, and losing focus on what they are supposed to evaluate — typography, spacing, hierarchy, and visual balance.

Lorem Ipsum’s Latin-like appearance creates text blocks that have the visual weight and character distribution of real content without the cognitive pull of readable language. A designer showing a homepage mockup wants feedback on “does this layout work?” not “I think the third paragraph should mention our pricing.”

Alternatives to Lorem Ipsum

While Lorem Ipsum remains dominant, several alternatives have gained traction:

Hipster Ipsum: “Beard wolf messenger bag…” — generates trendy-sounding placeholder text for a more modern feel.

Bacon Ipsum: “Bacon ipsum dolor amet…” — meat-themed placeholder text that brings levity to design reviews.

Real content early: Some design methodologies advocate using actual (or draft) content from the beginning of the design process, arguing that placeholder text leads to designs that look good with placeholder content but break when real content with different lengths and structures is inserted.

When Not to Use Lorem Ipsum

Placeholder text is appropriate for visual design reviews, typography testing, and layout exploration. It is not appropriate for usability testing (testers need real content to evaluate whether the interface communicates effectively), client presentations of nearly-final designs (real content should be in place by this stage), or any context where the length and structure of the actual content will significantly affect the layout.
