About CalcuWord
CalcuWord was created in 2023 by a freelance content writer who was tired of using three different websites to count words, check character limits, and convert text cases. She needed a word counter that also showed reading time, a character counter with platform-specific limits for social media, and a case converter that handled Unicode properly — all in one place, without juggling browser tabs.
The first version had just three tools: Word Counter, Character Counter, and Case Converter. Feedback from other writers in online communities led to the addition of Text to Slug (requested by SEO writers who create dozens of URL slugs daily), Remove Duplicates (requested by a data journalist who cleaned email lists regularly), and Text Diff Checker (requested by an editor who reviewed revision rounds for multiple authors).
Built by Writers, for Writers
Every tool on CalcuWord exists because a real writer needed it in their daily work. We do not build gimmicky text tools that look impressive in demos but nobody actually uses. Our focus is on the unglamorous but essential tasks that writers, editors, and content creators perform repeatedly — counting words to meet requirements, formatting text for different platforms, cleaning up data, and comparing document versions.
The Word Counter shows reading time because Medium, WordPress, and other platforms display it to readers, and writers need to know what that estimate will be before publishing. The Character Counter includes platform-specific limits because a social media manager posting to five platforms needs to know their caption fits each one without trial and error. These are not fancy features — they are workflow necessities.
Privacy for Sensitive Content
Writers often work with content that is unpublished, confidential, or sensitive — client articles under NDA, legal documents, academic papers before submission, personal journal entries, and business communications. CalcuWord processes all text entirely in your browser. Your words are never uploaded to any server, never stored in any database, and never read by anyone except you. When you close the tab, your text is gone.
Who Maintains CalcuWord
CalcuWord is maintained by a small team of two — the original creator (a writer turned developer) and a frontend developer who joined later to improve the interface and add new tools. We both continue to write professionally, which means we use our own tools daily and notice issues immediately. If a tool is slow or awkward to use, we fix it because it annoys us personally before it annoys anyone else.
